For people with a spiritual outlook, creativity can also become a quiet ritual: a period of making something without needing to achieve, compete, or solve another problem.
Stress can pull attention toward tomorrow's obligations or yesterday's difficulties. Creative activity offers another direction. You choose a color. Listen for the next chord. Frame a photograph. Put one sentence on paper. The task is small enough to inhabit.
That does not make creativity a substitute for professional mental health care when it is needed. But as an everyday practice, creating can complement other approaches to managing stress.
